Telecoms face 'one big mess' in Gulf Coast region
Cellular phone coverage in New Orleans is improving amid Hurricane Katrina relief efforts in New Orleans, but repair crews still cannot access certain infrastructures within the city to make repairs. Cingular, Verizon, Sprint, and BellSouth all report that they cannot access damaged equipment in New Orleans. Communication has improved in areas that Katrina did not hit as hard, such as Mobile, Alabama, and Pensacola, Florida. Crews are using portable generators with truck-based antennae and increasing power to rooftop transceivers in the meantime. Most of the damage is in the landline portion of the cellular network, consisting of fiber optics and T1 lines. The storm has disabled service to over a million landline phones, with service restored to only 130,000. Relief workers are suffering interoperability problems with the cell phones and radios that have been given to them to coordinate relief efforts.
