Sprint-Nextel Merger Gets OK From Government
The proposed $35 billion acquisition of Nextel by Sprint got a thumbs-up from the FCC and Justice Department yesterday, pretty much rubber-stamping the deal which would make Sprint the third largest wireless company in the United States, with over 40 million customers, behind Cingular and Verizon. Both companies promised the FCC they would use part of their spectrum to provide wireless broadband services to at least 30 million people in large and small markets. The company, which will be known as Sprint Nextel Corp., will have about 60,000 employees.
